Body Jewelry Guide
Wearing body jewelry is becoming more and more popular. This page will offer tips on body and piercing jewelry. Whether you have already gotten your piercings or you are considering getting a body piercing, this page will offer some valuable tips on purchasing Body Jewelry.
Types of Body Jewelry
Ring jewelry is measured by ring width or diameter. The Gauge of the jewelry means the thickness of the
jewelry. The smaller the gauge number, the thicker the jewelry will be. Jewelry should be no greater than 14 gauge if
worn below the neck, due to the tearing factor.
Bars, are the type of jewelry used in some piercings like the tongue and are measured in length.
When your piercing is first done, a longer bar will be used. When your piercing heals, a shorter bar can be used.
Recommended Body Jewelry Metals
Implant grade stainless steel jewelry is reasonably priced and safe to use for new piercings. This is least likely to produce a
foreign body reaction or infection. More options available for new piercings are metals such as gold (at least 18 karat), titanium, or niobium.
All of these cost more than implant grade stainless steel but are safe to use.
Silver is not recommended for new piercings because
tarnish from the silver gets deposited into the skin. The deposits will often darken the surrounding skin, whichcan be permanent.
Note though, that Sterling Silver Jewelry can be safely worn on most healed piercings. It should notbe worn, however,
in the mouth or genital area where the skin is moist.
Gold body jewelry should be 18 karat for new piercings and at least 14k gold
for healed piercings. Gold-filled or gold-plated jewelry should never be used in any body piercings due to the fact that the metal
is very thin. The finish wears away very easily and it will chip with even the slightest contact. Also, the white gold contains nickel,
a metal that commonly causes an allergic reaction among people.
Titanium is also used for body jewelry. It is advisable, though,
that Titanium jewelry be highly polished in order to reduce the porosity (pores or very tiny holes in the metal). If it is not highly
polished this will create a bonding effect to the body tissue.
Options are available for people that allergic and these include
Teflon or nylon piercings.
